Learning Holiday Will Explore the Mysteries of Ancient Greece
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 1, 2008 -- The NY Open Center, the city's leading center of holistic learning, is producing a five day conference on the magical Island of Samothrace, Greece, September 3rd-8th, 2008. International scholars, writers and artists will gather on Samothrace for the seventh Open Center's conference: An Esoteric Quest for The Mysteries and Philosophy of Antiquity. The conference will be followed by optional journeys to the Sufi and Byzantine world of Istanbul or to Delphi and Eleusis on mainland Greece.
Samothrace (Samothraki) was for a thousand years the site of one of the great mystery centers of antiquity. With one of the highest mountain ranges in the Aegean, according to Homer, it is where Poseidon observed the fall of Troy.
This year's Esoteric Quest includes internationally renowned speakers such as Professor Keith Critchlow, formerly of the Royal College of Art in London, and an authority on sacred architecture. Joining him are other leading architects deeply versed in the classical proportions and their spiritual symbolism. Greek authors devoted to the study of the ancient mysteries will offer lectures and workshops and there will be visits to the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, site of significant Hellenic and pre-Hellenic religious rites.
At a time when the world yearns for greater wisdom, what better place to seek it than in the birthplace of philosophy? What can we learn from the spiritual experience, wisdom and art of antiquity that can be applied to the crises and dilemmas of the 21st Century? This conference is for all those who seek deeper answers to the problems of existence than our contemporary materialistic society offers.
Evening events include music from the time of Pythagoras played on instruments meticulously reconstructed from the period; a performance of Euripides' The Bacchae; and Samothracian dances, some of which date back 3,000 years.
There will be three optional post-conference tours that will take participants deeper into this fascinating epoch including trips to Istanbul and to the Roman city of Ephesus, and to the mystery centers of Mainland Greece.
While many others have explored the wisdom and spirituality of the East, the New York Open Center's conferences have been at the leading edge of an important cultural trend that is serving to awaken spiritually searching people from throughout North America and Europe to the riches of their own Western heritage.
The Open Center is a non-profit organization located in Soho in downtown Manhattan. Considered as America's major urban institution of holistic learning, Its co-founder and creative director, Ralph White, is the originator of this unique series of international conferences on the Western Esoteric Tradition.
